Viola by Alexander Youngson, Glasgow, 1960

About Alexander Youngson

Alexander Youngson was a Glasgow maker whose instruments were very popular with professional violists at the time: try this viola to find out why!

About the viola

This viola was made in 1960. It is a very successful personal model which Youngson tended to use in the earlier part of his career.

The viola has a one piece back of beautifully figured, narrow-flamed maple. There are wings to increase the width of the piece of wood added to the upper and lower bouts on the treble side. The front is two pieces of spruce and the varnish is amber-yellow in colour.

The viola has a length of back of 16 and a 1/2 inches.

How does it sound?

The viola has a lively tone and is responsive. The model is unusually broad, helping to give it an individual sound.

Condition

The viola is in very good original condition.
