Violin labelled Andreas Renisto, Scotland, 1929
About Andreas Renisto
Like Luigi Salsedo, Andreas Renisto is a European-sounding name used for marketing purposes! The story behind the instruments is fascinating and still not entirely clear: current research suggests that it’s most likely that these instruments were imported to Scotland by a dealer in the Borders called Jim Tait. The instruments were clearly made in a number of different European workshops and then shipped to the Scottish Borders in the white. Tait then varnished and sold them, focussing his marketing on the fact that the instruments were made from ‘Italian wood’.
About the violin
The violin was made in an Italian workshop and then varnished in Scotland. The model shows the influence of several Italian makers including Guadagnini.
The violin has a two piece back of highly-figured quarter sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of finely-grained spruce and the varnish is a shaded golden brown.
The violin has a length of back of 359 mm.
How does it sound?
This violin excels in the clarity of its tone. The violin, even at the softest dynamics has a purity to its sound which helps a whisper to carry and speak. I find my self playing more accurately and in tune on this violin - it's ease of playing and projection seem to encourage a very relaxed technique (at least with my playing). A compelling and beautiful sounding violin.
Condition
The violin is in excellent condition.
