Violin by Andrew Smillie, Glasgow, 1947
About Andrew Smillie
Andrew Smillie was the son and pupil of Alexander Smillie and took over his father´s business in 1919. He was a prolific maker, having made over 200 violins in addition to some violas and cellos.
From his premises on the Great Western Road, Smillie was responsible for the care and sale of many fine Italian instruments in addition to his own making. The workshop remained active until 1977, latterly under the management of Smillie´s daughter Ina.
About the violin
Made in 1947, the year before Smillie´s death, this violin is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.
The violin has a one-piece back of quite highly-flamed maple, the figuration descending from right to left. The front is two pieces of spruce, widening considerably towards the flanks. The varnish is red in colour, laid over a lighter ground, and the violin has a length of back of 357 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a good all-round instrument which projects well and is even across the strings. It has a clear, silvery tone and feels very reliable to play.
Condition
The violin is in good restored condition.
