About Mirecourt instrument making

Mirecourt is located in the Vosges area of north-eastern France and has been famous for its luthiers since the end of the 16th century. By the twentieth century Mirecourt was producing around 80,000 instruments a year.

Mirecourt instruments from this period almost always display excellent, neat craftsmanship and tone wood of good quality.

About this cello

The cello was made in Mirecourt circa 1880 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The cello has a one piece slab-cut back. The ribs and scroll are of plainer maple. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is a rich red in colour.

The cello has a length of back of 769 mm and is modelled after the instruments of Grancino.

How does it sound?

This is a superb all-rounder instrument: it's even, responsive and produces a great tone with ease.

Condition

The cello is in very good restored condition.
