Violin made in Saxony, circa 1900
About Saxon violins
This violin was made in Markneukirchen, a small town in the Saxony region of Germany famous for its great number of violin making workshops. The town is less than 10km away from Luby, its Czech equivalent, leading to a great deal of crossover between the two towns.
The town remains active as a centre of violin making today, with over 100 different instrument workshops and a charming museum dedicated to its extraordinary history.
About the violin
This violin was made in Saxony for the Beare and Son company and is labelled 'The Wardour Violin', after the street on which the business was located. It is modelled after the instruments of Guarneri 'del Gesù'.
The violin has a two piece back of quarter sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is golden amber in colour.
The violin has a length of back of 354 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a brilliantly soloistic violin! It has a bold, confident character with a big sound across the range. It would work wonderfully for a young player tackling advanced repertoire.
Condition
