Violin by Bernhard Simon Fendt, London, circa 1805

Violin by Bernhard Simon Fendt, London, circa 1805

About Bernhard Simon Fendt Senior

Bernard Simon Fendt was born in Füssen in 1769, the son of a lock maker. He trained in Paris with his uncle François, a German immigrant to the city who had learnt his craft in Füssen before making the move west. Bernhard Simon remained with his uncle until the latter's death in 1796, moving to London two years later.

Fendt took up work in Thomas Dodd's shop upon arriving in London, remaining there for eleven years. He joined the Betts workshop in 1809, famously becoming workshop foreman in that star-studded environment.

John Betts was one of the foremost dealers in the world at that time: Fendt made many superb instruments for him, bringing a more refined, continental approach to making than had previously been the norm in the London trade.

About the violin

The violin was made in London circa 1805 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The violin has a length of back of 356 mm.

How does it sound?
