About David Rattray
David Rattray has been active in making and restoring violin family instruments for some four decades, specialising in classical Italian copies.
After more than 25 years as instrument curator at the Royal Academy of Music and honoured with a senior fellowship he relocated to Scotland in 2014, more recently accepting the role of strings consultant to the Royal Conservatoire.
He has been involved in a broad range of violin-related endeavours, from restoring and appraising antique instruments, lecturing and curating exhibitions, to the reconstruction of the Mary Rose fiddles and the copying of Paganini’s ‘Cannon’ Guarneri del Gesù, and as director of the Vivaldi Project – a Venetian-style baroque orchestra, the largest instrument commission of modern times. He is a member of the Ente Triennale Scientific Committee, Cremona and served as a jury member of the Antonio Stradivari International Violin Making Competition 2009. David's instruments can be found in the hands of professional players across the UK and beyond.
About the violin
This violin was made in David's Fife workshop in 2021 and is modelled after the 1742 'Lord Wilton' del Gesù.
The violin has a one piece back of very attractive quarter-sawn maple, the flame ascending from left to right. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood and the front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce. The varnish is a rich amber in colour, laid over a golden ground.
The violin has a length of back of 352 mm.
How does it sound?
This violin has a big, juicy sound and bags of character! It sings even in the quietest dynamic and is really easy to play.
Condition
The violin is in original mint condition.
