Violin by Giuseppe Stefanini, Brescia, circa 1960
About Giuseppe Stefanini
Giuseppe Stefanini was born in 1908 and learnt his craft as an employee of Luigi Vistoli of Lugo. Following the Second World War he worked for both Nicola Utili and Pietro Borghi before embarking on a close working relationship with the Bisiach family, for whom he made a great many instruments. Stefanini left Lugo for Brescia in 1957 and moved again to Florence in 1986, remaining there until his death in 1992.
Stefanini's work is much prized for its excellent craftsmanship and individuality, as well as for his close links with the Bisiach workshop.
About the violin
This violin was made in Brescia circa 1960, during which time Stefanini was working for the Bisiach brothers. It is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari and very much shows the influence of the Bisiach workshop.
The violin has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of medium-grained spruce which widens towards the flanks. The varnish is reddish-brown in colour, laid over a lighter golden ground.
The violin has a length of back of 356 mm.
How does it sound?
This is an enticingly dark, soft violin that also has unbelievable projection! It's the kind of Modern Italian we really love: all of the power we associate with the school, but wrapped around a dark and interesting sound.
Condition
The violin is in good condition with some well-executed restoration. It comes with a full condition report.
Certification
The violin comes with the 2015 certificate of Eric Blot.
