Violin made in Mittenwald circa 1780

Violin made in Mittenwald circa 1780

About Klotz School violins

The Klotz family and the history of Mittenwald are closely intertwined. There are at least 25 known violin makers in the Klotz family, many of whom worked at the same time as each other. Most of these makers did not use their own labels: this in conjunction with the sheer enormity of the production has given rise to the term Klotz school, a phrase that usually indicates that the instrument was made in Mittenwald and is modelled after Stainer. Mittenwald instruments of this period are almost always of extremely high quality and offer excellent value for money.

About the violin

This violin was made in Mittenwald around 1780, by an unknown maker working in the style of the Klotz family. It is built on the typical Mittenwald Stainer model we see during this period.

The violin has a one piece back of very attractive figured maple. The ribs and scroll are of quarter sawn maple and the front is two pieces of very fine-grained spruce. The varnish is golden brown in colour, laid over a lighter golden ground.

The violin has a length of back of 359 mm.

How does it sound?

We seek out anonymous Mittenwald instruments for their budget-defying tone: this one is no exception! The violin plays with all of the class, warmth and projection we expect of the school. It's exceptionally well balanced and plays impeccably.

Condition

The violin is in very good condition.
