Viola by Robin McHugh, Alloa, 1985

About Robin McHugh

Robin McHugh is a respected Scottish luthier who inspired many others in his role as a teacher of restoration at Edinburgh's Stevenson College. He was employed as a restorer at Stringers of Edinburgh before setting up his own workshop in Alloa.

About the viola

This viola was made in Alloa in 1985 and is built on a personal model.

The viola has a two piece back of quarter sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce which widens towards the flanks and the varnish is an unshaded golden amber.

The viola has a length of back of 16 and a half inches.

How does it sound?

This is very much a tenor viola: it has a warm, powerful lower register with great clarity of tone in the upper register. It speaks very easily and plays reliably but without lacking in character.

Condition

The viola is in excellent condition.
