Violin by Gareth Ballard, London, 2024

Violin by Gareth Ballard, London, 2024

About Gareth Ballard

Gareth is a very fine luthier whose workshop is based on London´s Lambeth Walk. He originally worked as a composer and performer before going on to study violin making, first of all in Italy and then at the Newark School of Violin Making. Gareth talks about his fascinating process here.

In addition to being a talented violin maker, Gareth is much sought-after as a restorer. This violin combines these two roles, being based on a fine Nicolò Amati which Gareth looks after.

About the violin

The violin was made in Gareth's Lambeth workshop in 2024 and is modelled after a violin by Nicolò Amati.

The violin has a two piece back of finely-flamed maple, the figuration descending from the centre joint. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood. The front is two pieces of characterful spruce and the varnish is golden-amber in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 349 mm.

How does it sound?

Gareth is an extremely experienced luthier whose instruments always work brilliantly: this violin is no exception! It is even and easy to play, with a lovely vintage quality to the tone. This instrument would be a reliable partner in orchestra, speaking without effort when required and yet providing great quality in more lyrical passages.

Condition

The violin is in original mint condition.
